Fats Waller’s Rhythm
Choreography by Morgan McEwen
Commissioned by Aaron Davis Hall through a CUNY Dance Initiative Grant
Fats Waller’s Rhythm is a joyful, jazz-infused ballet that celebrates the legendary Harlem composer and pianist Fats Waller, whose music defined an era with its infectious swing and indelible spirit. Originally created during a two week residency at Aaron Davis Hall through a grant from the CUNY Dance Initiative, this work blends classical ballet with the improvisational heart of jazz to create something entirely its own: buoyant, brilliant, and alive with movement.
Set to a suite of Waller’s music the piece is both a tribute and a celebration. It honors the legacy of one of Harlem’s most dynamic artists while drawing a line from the past to the present, inviting audiences to hear and see Waller’s music with fresh eyes and ears.
This performance revives a piece first created in 2018 as a response to Waller’s larger-than-life persona and musical legacy. The work captures not just his sound, but his playfulness, resilience, and sense of joy, elements that speak deeply to the values of MorDance. It’s a work that’s meant to bring people together in celebration of community, culture, and creativity.
